APAHM Community Day of Service

LOS ANGELES - The Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department (LA Civil Rights), The Department of Public Works, Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, City leaders and many partners joined together for a community day of service in AAPI neighborhoods across Los Angeles. 

More than 400 volunteers filled hundreds of bags of trash in Koreatown, Little Bangladesh, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Thai Town, and Historic Filipinotown on Saturday, May 22 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The event was supported by the Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti, and many city leaders joined the clean up effort, including City Attorney Mike Feuer and Councilmember Gil Cedillo, Councilmember Kevin de Leon, Councilmember John Lee, Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell, Councilmember Nithya Raman, and Councilmember Mark Ridley Thomas. Each site was supported by local community groups with brought food, water and supplies.

The event was a part of a month of programming to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM), and show a unified stand against hate incidents and hate crimes targeting the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. According to the non-profit organization Stop AAPI Hate, hate incidents targeting the AAPI community jumped from 3,795 to 6,603 in March 2021 alone.
